Don’t Be Afraid

Ryan Scott Carrell · April 30, 2020 · Leave a Comment

This verse isn’t about shaming us when we have fear. It’s okay to be afraid. Ryan talked about that in yesterday’s post here: https://wearesoutheast.org/2020/04/29/when-i-am-afraid/.

So, what’s going on here? Why are we told to not be afraid?

As a parent comforts a child, so God comforts us in our fear. A parent doesn’t cruelly tell their child to grow up, they hold them and comfort them in the midst of their fear until they feel safe and release that tight grasp.

This verse is a reminder that God is ready to take our hand, to carry us in times of fear, and to comfort us until we feel safe enough to walk again. Don’t feel ashamed at being afraid, put your trust in God, and know that He is close to you, in the midst of your fear.

When I Am Afraid

When, not if. Did you catch that?

When I am afraid, not if I am afraid.

The question isn’t if you will experience fearful situations, it’s what do you in the midst of it. The wonder of the human mind is the ability to trust and fear, to hold onto those two feelings at the same time. But while we know what we fear, we have to identify whom we trust.

Will you allow fear to own your experience, or will you take your other hand and hold onto trust in God in the midst of fear?

Word of the Day: Generosity

Word of the Day: GENEROSITY

My friend Nate closed down his dining room at his restaurant yesterday and shifted to carry-out only. This decision came at the direction of the mayor and governor. Nate could have stayed open through the evening, but he saw closing early as the right thing to do.

I know that it will be an uphill battle for businesses like Nate’s as people change the way the financially operate in a crisis like this. Businesses and individuals are not faceless corporations, many of them are our neighbors and friends.

And, while this is a time to be financially wise, we should also continue to be generous, especially if you’re still working and being compensated. This isn’t a guilt trip, it’s a call for those of us who are able, to support those who will struggle.

So, here’s my advice. If a service or business you love goes online, follow them there and engage with them (especially your church 😊 ). If they can’t or don’t offer a service online, support them none the less. Here’s how.

I saw a similar list to what I’m going to share, but I want you to see it so we can think practically about this.

Do you go to a stylist who depends on that for their living? Let your hair grow, but still pay for that haircut.

Do your kids have piano lessons? Don’t cancel them. Pay for them and bless their teacher!

Do you love your pizza place? Buy their gift cards or utilize their carry out. Maybe buy a little extra and tip generously!

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.- 1 Timothy 6:17-18

Love you all,

Pastor Ryan
